MORE than 40 students from Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) were among 150 who turned up at a basketball workshop held at the Perak royal town recently.
The workshop, jointly organised by the All Malaysian Basketball Academy (Ambac) and the Kuala Kangsar MCA Youth division was opened by Kuala Kangsar MCA Youth chairman Ling Hee Leong who is also the party’s deputy youth chief.
In his speech, Ling said physical strength alone would not guarantee success for sportsmen unless they played as a team.
“The important things to learn at this workshop are not only how to play basketball but how to cooperate with team mates,” said Ling.
Ambac executive director Liew Yong Choon said the workshop was meant to encourage budding cagers to improve their game.
“The presence of MCKK students is encouraging as we want more students from Malay schools to take up basketball seriously,” he said.
The programme was launched last year and workshops have been conducted in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang with the recent one in Alor Star.
Liew said under the programme, talented cagers between the age of 12 and 17 would be identified and subsequently enrolled in tuition classes, funded by Ambac.
“Talented basketball players are normally weak in English but under this programme, we enrol them at the nearest private educational institutions so that they can improve in the subject,” said Liew.
